In a world of desk work, devices and driving — poor posture is behind more pain than most people realise. Back pain, neck pain, headaches and shoulder tension often trace back to how you hold your body day after day. Our chiropractors assess your spinal posture, identify areas of dysfunction, and work with our physiotherapists and massage therapists to help your body function better.
Your posture is the foundation of how your spine functions. When you spend hours sitting, scrolling or driving, the joints of your spine adapt to those sustained positions — becoming stiff where they shouldn't be and mobile where they shouldn't be. Over time, this produces pain.
Our chiropractors assess your full spinal posture — from the cervical spine down to the pelvis — identifying areas of restriction, excessive curvature and muscular imbalance. Through spinal adjustment and mobilisation, chiropractic care aims to restore the movement patterns your spine needs to hold you well. Many patients are surprised by how much of their pain traces back to postural dysfunction.
At WYLD, chiropractic postural assessment is complemented by physiotherapy for corrective exercise and ergonomic advice, and massage therapy to release the chronic muscular tension that poor posture creates.
Book a Chiropractic AssessmentPoor posture isn't just cosmetic — it changes how your spine functions, how your muscles load and how your nerves behave. These are the most common postural presentations we see.
Looking down at your phone at 60 degrees places approximately 27kg of effective force on your cervical spine — over 5x the weight of your head in neutral. This sustained posture tightens the suboccipital muscles, stiffens the upper cervical joints and is one of the most common postural dysfunctions our chiropractors see.
Prolonged sitting rounds the thoracic spine, protracts the shoulders and tilts the pelvis. The lumbar discs are loaded 40% more in sitting than standing. Without regular movement, the spinal joints stiffen in this flexed position — producing back pain, neck pain and shoulder tension.
Forward shoulder posture (protraction) tightens the pectorals and weakens the mid-back muscles. This imbalance changes shoulder blade position, reduces the space for rotator cuff tendons, and is strongly associated with shoulder impingement, neck pain and thoracic stiffness.
An exaggerated curve in the upper back — often from sustained desk posture or device use. This "hunchback" position restricts thoracic mobility, compresses the anterior vertebral bodies, and forces the cervical and lumbar spine to compensate — often producing pain above and below the stiff region.
For every inch your head sits forward of your shoulders, the effective load on your cervical spine increases dramatically. Forward head posture strains the posterior neck muscles, compresses the upper cervical joints and is one of the most common contributors to tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches.
Long commutes in Auckland mean hours in a sustained seated position — often with poor lumbar support, arms extended and head protruded. The vibration of driving compounds the compressive load on the spine. Many of our patients' postural complaints are partly driven by their daily commute.
Chiropractic postural assessment identifies where your spine is restricted. But lasting postural change also requires strengthening the right muscles and releasing chronic tension — which is where our full team comes in.
Physiotherapy — Corrective exercise programmes targeting the specific muscles that are weak or inhibited. Desk ergonomic assessment and advice. Core stability work and postural retraining. Our physiotherapists turn the awareness from chiropractic assessment into lasting structural change.
Massage Therapy — Chronic postural tension — particularly in the neck, upper shoulders and lower back — responds well to regular massage. Deep tissue work on the pectorals, trapezius and suboccipital muscles helps break the tension-pain cycle that poor posture creates.
Acupuncture — For patients whose postural pain is compounded by stress and tension, acupuncture may support nervous system regulation and muscular relaxation alongside chiropractic and physiotherapy care.
A full spinal postural assessment — because the pain you feel is often not where the problem is.
Your chiropractor asks about your daily routine — desk setup, screen time, driving habits, sleep position, exercise and stress levels. Understanding how you use your body every day is essential.

A hands-on examination including range of motion testing, orthopaedic tests, neurological screening and spinal palpation to identify areas of restricted movement.

Your chiropractor explains what they've found — which regions are restricted, which muscles are overworking, and how your posture is contributing to your symptoms. A tailored care plan is outlined.

If appropriate, chiropractic adjustment begins at your first visit — targeting the restricted spinal regions. Postural exercises and ergonomic advice are provided to begin creating change between visits.

If you work at a desk, drive for long periods or have a physically demanding job — your posture is directly affecting your health. Many of our patients present with pain that traces back to sustained workplace postures. Our chiropractors and physiotherapists can assess your posture, identify the problem areas, and build a plan to create lasting change.
If your postural pain is the result of a workplace injury or incident, ACC may cover your care. Our practitioners can lodge claims in-house. Southern Cross health insurance also covers chiropractic and physiotherapy at WYLD.
WYLD is also recognised by Southern Cross health insurance for chiropractic, physiotherapy and acupuncture.

Chiropractors assess spinal function and identify areas of joint restriction that contribute to poor posture. Through adjustment and mobilisation, chiropractic care aims to restore normal spinal movement — which is the foundation for better postural alignment. Lasting change also requires strengthening exercises (physiotherapy) and lifestyle modifications.
Text neck is the forward head posture caused by looking down at phones and devices. At 60 degrees of flexion, approximately 27kg of effective force is placed on the cervical spine — over 5 times the weight of your head. Over time, this contributes to joint stiffness, muscular tension and headaches. Our chiropractors commonly work with this presentation.
This depends on how long the postural dysfunction has been present and how consistently you follow your care plan. Many patients notice symptomatic improvement within a few weeks. Structural postural change typically takes longer — often 2-3 months of consistent chiropractic care, exercises and lifestyle modifications.
Yes. Forward head posture and upper cervical joint restriction are strongly associated with tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches. The suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull tighten under sustained forward head posture, feeding directly into headache pathways. Addressing posture through chiropractic care often has a positive effect on headache patterns.
Very possibly. Poor desk ergonomics — screen height, chair position, keyboard placement, monitor distance — directly affects spinal posture. Our physiotherapists can assess your workspace setup and provide specific ergonomic recommendations alongside chiropractic care for your spine.
No referral is needed for any service at WYLD. You can book a chiropractic postural assessment directly online. If your postural pain is related to a workplace injury, ACC may apply.
